Creating a brighter
future for girls living in
poverty in Tanzania
Educating girls, transforming
futures in Tanzania
Poverty has been identified as the biggest barrier to education for young girls in Tanzania. Teenage pregnancy is common and leads to girls dropping out of education to earn money for themselves and their families. In 2016, 25% of 15-19 year-old girls in Tanzania were pregnant (United Nations Fund for Population Activities).

Fewer than 52% of children in the country complete their secondary education and 74% live in poverty. A UNICEF report into child poverty in Tanzania has identified education as the best solution to breaking the cycle of poverty. For every extra year of primary education, a girl’s individual wage rate increases an average of 10–20% and 25% with an extra year of secondary school (World Bank).
The Raheli Trust, a registered charity, has been working in some of the poorest communities in Tanzania since 2008. Our students come from impoverished families including those where one or both parents have died, leaving them to be brought up by often elderly relatives with few resources. A few particularly needy boys have been put forward as special cases and have also been helped where possible.
The Trust provides you with an opportunity to sponsor a girl, or girls, through their school and possibly college years. Since 2008, we have sponsored more than 130 students at secondary school. Many have then gone on to higher education where their diplomas and degrees have helped them gain employment.
All our trustees are volunteers so 100% of your donation goes directly to Tanzania to support your student.
Sponsorship also provides an excellent opportunity for socially conscious corporates to meet their Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) standards and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). There are also opportunities to sponsor a project.
Education empowers women to make choices to benefit theirs and their children’s well-being, invest in their communities and break the cycle of poverty. Access to education changes everything.

Who We Are
The Raheli Trust was started in 2008 by women in the UK who had benefited from free education and wanted to provide that opportunity to girls whose families were unable to pay school fees in Tanzania.

Sponsor a Student
Your donation will fund one young girl through four years of secondary school and pay for her tuition, uniform, books and equipment as well as her boarding fees and meals.
